Average Housing Proce Among Major Cities

This bar chart race shows the average housing price between 2018 to 2020 among six major cities. We can clearly see that Sydney has the highest average housing price. On the other hand, Perth has the lowest housing price which indicates that it is easier to own a house in Perth compared to other cities. As the capital city of Australia, Canberra has a similar price level with Brisbane. It really depends on your preferences and living styles when come to choose between Canberra and Brisbane. The two most well-known city in Australia, Sydney and Melbourne, as there is always an argument of ‘which one is the best city to live in Australia?’. This time, it depends on your budget.

Melbourne Average Housing Price (2019)

The map below is a choropleth map of Melbourne, the hue of each suburb represents the average housing price, and the location of each University is also highlighted with red dots on the map. When we zoom in to see the detail, we can discover that most of the top universities are located in Melbourne CBD. However, from the map, we can see that the average housing price near Melbourne CBD are not high. On the contrary, east Melbourne and suburbs along Port Phillip Bay have higher housing prices.

Conclusion

On the first question:

Sydney has the highest housing prices of any major Australian city, and Adelaide has the lowest.


For the second question

The more populous the city, the greater the chance of higher housing prices. In my opinion, due to the limitation of housing resources, with the increase of population, the house price will go up.


One last question:

Based on exploration and visualization, the location of top universities does not directly affect housing prices. However, it can affect house prices more or less, because the suburbs around the top universities have higher than average house prices.
